Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the City of Toronto and parts of the Greater Toronto Area ahead of possible overnight thunderstorms.

In a statement issued late Friday afternoon, the weather agency warned that a series of strong to severe thunderstorms had developed over Wisconsin and are expected to trickle into southern Ontario.

Strong wind gusts, frequent lightning, hail and torrential downpours could potentially accompany the storms, Environment Canada said.

“It is uncertain how strong or widespread these storms will be when they reach southern Ontario,” the statement reads.

The agency advised people to watch for weather warnings, which could be issued later in the evening as the storm draws closer.
