Parts of southern Ontario got the first snowfall of the year on Halloween, as a slow-moving low pressure system made its way across the region.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement on Friday for the following areas:

  • York – Durham
  • Halton - Peel
  • Peterborough – Kawartha Lakes
  • Waterloo – Wellington
  • Barrie – Orillia – Midland
  • Haliburton
  • Parry Sound – Muskoka
  • Algonquin
  • Renfrew – Pembroke – Barry’s Bay
  • Grey – Bruce
  • Dufferin Innisfil
  • Burk's Falls – Bayfield Inlet
  • Bancroft – Bon Echo Park

"Mother nature delivers some rather frightening weather for Halloween," the national weather agency said in a statement Friday evening.

In Markham, Richmond Hill and Vaughan, rain was expected to change to a few flurries near midnight. Approximately 2 cm of snow was expected to cover those areas, but Environment Canada said the actual snowfall accumulation on the ground would likely be less due to the still relatively warm ground. The snowfall was expected to taper off by early Saturday morning.

In areas east of Georgian Bay, Environment Canada says approximately 10 cm of snow was expected by Saturday morning. And in regions south of the bay, 2 cm to 5 cm, was expected.
