Ontario's Special Investigations Unit has launched an investigation after a fire and a "domestic incident" in a rural community north of Orangeville, Ont.

In a statement released Friday evening, the SIU said OPP members from the Dufferin Detachment were called to a residence in the Melancthon Township at approximately 10 p.m. on Thursday. Officers were responding to a "call of domestic nature," the SIU said.

At approximately 8 a.m. the following day, first responders were again called to the same residence due to a fire. CTV Barrie says members of Dundalk Fire responded to the blaze, but were held back by police until approximately 10 a.m. It is not known why they were being held back.

The SIU has assigned four investigators, and four forensic investigators to probe the incident.

Meanwhile, 2nd Line Northeast, between 240 Side Road and Dufferin County Road 21, has been closed due to the investigation.

The SIU investigates all incidents involving police that result in death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529, ext. 2290.
