Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is probing a police-involved shooting that occurred at a pharmacy on Wednesday morning.
Police were called to Handy Variety convenience store at 591 Sherbourne St., the area of Sherbourne and Bloor Streets, at around 8:30 a.m. for reports of a hold-up.
Officers rushed to the area, and the suspect fled to a nearby Rexall PharmaPlus at 345 Bloor St. E.
Police have not provided specific details, but said that shots were fired and the suspect was injured.
"I was told, 'You have to get out of here. There's a guy with a gun,'" a witness told CTV Toronto's Ashley Rowe.
"There was just pandemonium and everybody just ran, ran, ran," another witness said.
The 34-year-old man was rushed to St. Michael's Hospital in life-threatening condition, paramedics said. He appeared to have gunshot wounds to the leg and torso.
The SIU invoked its mandate shortly before 9 a.m., meaning police are no longer allowed to comment on the incident. Six investigators and two forensic investigators are looking into the shooting, the SIU said in a statement on Wednesday.
The police watchdog agency is automatically called in when police actions result in death or serious injury.
As a result of the shooting, Bloor has been closed between Sherbourne and Huntley Streets.
