A man has died after a car crashed through a backyard fence in midtown Toronto early Wednesday morning.

Toronto police said the car crashed through the fence of a home in the area of Oakwood Avenue and Earnscliffe Road shortly before 2 a.m. The car then became wedged in the back deck of the home.

Police said the driver abandoned the vehicle. Officers found a man believed to be connected to the incident a short time later, according to Ontario's police watchdog.

The Special Investigations Unit said there was an interaction between the man and police, and that the man was handcuffed. He then suffered "medical distress" and was rushed to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, according to an SIU statement.

Five SIU investigators and three forensic investigators are looking into the circumstances of the man's death. Anyone with more information is asked to contact the arm's length agency at 1-800-787-8529, ext. 1873.

The SIU is called to investigate whenever police are involved in an incident with a member of the public that leads to death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
