The Special Investigations Unit is probing a double shooting that happened Sunday morning in the Roncesvalles Village neighbourhood, after a man died and a woman suffered serious injuries.

It happened in front of an apartment building on Howard Park Avenue near Roncesvalles Avenue at around 5:20 a.m.

After police arrived on scene, officers located the man and woman nearby. The man was shot in the chest, but it is not yet clear who fired the gun.

A 25-year-old woman was shot in the leg and was taken to hospital in stable but serious condition. It is also unclear how the woman became involved in the incident.

The Special Investigations Unit has invoked their mandate and is probing the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Around 4 p.m., they identified the man who died as 30-year-old Jenyon Middleton.

All surveillance videos from nearby businesses, residences and police cruisers will be reviewed, the SIU said. A forensics team is also mapping out the scene, they said.

Five investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the double shooting.

The SIU is asking any witnesses to come forward.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that is called in to investigate incidents involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
