A 49-year-old man was rushed to hospital in serious but stable condition after a shooting in Brampton, Peel paramedics say.

It happened just before 12 p.m. in the area of Kennedy Road and Steeles Avenue.

Paramedics said the male victim suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to a trauma centre in Toronto in serious but stable condition, but his injuries have since been downgraded to minor.

Peel Regional Police are searching for a suspect described as a black male who is approximately six-foot-two. He has a thin build and was last seen wearing baggy pants and a black hoodie.

According to police, the suspect fled the area on foot in the direction of Chamney Court.

"It's too early in the investigation to tell if this is gang related but it is believed to be an isolated incident and there is no threat to public safety," Const. Rachel Gibbs said at the scene on Sunday.

"If you see this person, do not approach them and give 911 a call."

Police said a truck located near the scene has been towed in relation with the incident.

Gibbs said that officers are collecting video evidence from nearby businesses and that the area will be closed off for several hours.

A perimeter has been set up and police advise people to avoid the area if possible.
