Parts of southern Ontario including Toronto are under a severe thunderstorm warning Friday afternoon.

Environment Canada warns that current weather conditions may lead to strong wind, large hail and heavy rain. The area was previously under a watch but has been upgraded to a warning, meaning the risk of storms is much higher.

Severe thunderstorms can down trees, damage property and produce tornados, the weather agency said in a statement.

The following areas are under a severe thunderstorm warning:

  • City of Toronto
  • Caledon
  • Vaughan-Richmond Hill-Markham
  • Pickering-Oshawa-Southern Durham Region
  • Newmarket-Georgina-Northern York Region
  • Cobourg-Colborne-Western Northumberland County
  • Uxbridge-Beaverton-Northern Durham Region
  • Shelburne-Mansfield-Northern Dufferin County
  • Innisfil-New Tecumseth-Angus
  • London-Parkhill-Eastern Middlesex County
  • Woodstock-Tillsonburg-Oxford County
  • Stratford-Mitchell-Southern Perth County
  • Listowel-Milverton-Northern Perth County
  • Mount Forest-Arthur-Northern Wellington County
  • Orangeville-Grand Valley-Southern Dufferin County
  • Hanover-Dundalk-Southern Grey County

The warning has ended for these areas:

  • Peterborough City-Lakefield-Southern Peterborough County
