It was a close call for a taxi driver and his passengers but everyone escaped relatively unscathed after two four-storey structures fell onto the road from a condo construction site, hitting the back of a cab.

The scaffolding fell across Richmond Street, just east of Peter Street, at about 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Nobody was seriously injured but paramedics were on the scene to check on the three occupants of the taxi. Toronto Fire Services Capt. Matt Parlette said the passengers were able to walk to the ambulance on their own.

Jama Hersi Ali, the driver of the taxi, told CP24 he was still feeling in shock at what happened.

Emergency crews blocked off Richmond Street at Peter Street, forcing traffic onto the southbound and northbound lanes of John Street.

Officials with the Ministry of Labour are on the scene trying to determine the circumstances that led to the crash.

A site manager told CP24 about 50 workers were on the construction site at the time of the incident. They were setting up the scaffolding when it fell.
