BURLINGTON, Ont. -- A door-to-door salesman has been arrested in Burlington, Ont., after allegedly accosting a child in her home.

Halton Region police say the man was trying to get residents to switch their hot water tank services on Saturday when he left a home after its owner declined his services.

Shortly after, police say the homeowner and one of her two children left the house to run errands, leaving her 11-year-old daughter alone in the home.

Police allege the 11-year-old heard someone knocking at the door and then noticed the door opening, at which point she ran upstairs to get a phone.

When she came back down, police say the salesman allegedly approached her, asked her a few questions and then placed a hand on her shoulder and another over her mouth, telling her not to scream and that he wouldn't hurt her.

Once the salesman removed his hand from the girl's mouth, police say she managed to run out of the house to a neighbour who called police.

The salesman fled the residence but was quickly arrested a short distance away.

Daniel Wight, 19, has been charged with break, enter and commit assault, forcible confinement and uttering threats.
