Recreational vehicles bring the comforts of home on the road, making them a popular choice among vacationing retirees who have time to take the scenic route. But according to some industry experts, that's slowly changing.

An increasing number of younger families are opting to hit the open road in an RV, according to Mark Boucher, of Fraserway RV.

"What we're seeing now is probably high 30s, early 40s," Boucher told CTV Toronto, adding that sales have been going up each year. "I'd say 60 per cent or better are just writing a cheque and paying for it."

Fans of RV vacations say the appeal is a community feel, combined with the ability to relax like they would in their own space.

"It's the same as being at home," RV owner Doug Leonard said."“You can have a fire every night, stuff like that, and there are a lot of nice people in the parks."

The growing popularity of RVs may also be linked to the lower Canadian dollar. According to a recent survey of 1,500 Canadians by the Conference Board of Canada, approximately half said they would consider travelling within the country by RV.

Many vacationers are also choosing to rent RV campers.

At an RV rental lot in southern Ontario, a row of approximately 17 vehicles are slated to hit the road on Tuesday -- and they were all rented approximately one year ago.

Jeannine Britschgi and her young family, who are visiting Canada from Switzerland, are considering renting an RV for a month. She says they've heard many positive things about RV vacations and are looking forward to exploring Canada on the road.

"We heard of many friends who decided to go with the RV," Britschgi said. "I have a good feeling."

The average rental fee for an RV is $120 a day, plus a mileage fee and gas.
