Police are investigating a Scarborough homicide after the body of an 82-year-old woman was discovered in her east-end home Wednesday afternoon.

Stella Tetsos lived on her own on Elfreda Boulevard, in the area of Birchmount Road and St. Clair Avenue East. Her body was found in the basement.

Few details have been provided, but investigators said that a side window was smashed and a door was propped open at Tetsos' bungalow. Police believe her death appears to be random and robbery may have been a motive.

"There's theft and violence in this situation," Det. Shannon Dawson told reporters. "Some of Mrs. Tetsos' property was removed from the residence."

Tetsos, who used a walker for mobility, had lived in the neighbourhood for about 40 years. Neighbours described her as a kind woman.

"I'm just so upset," one resident told CTV Toronto. "See the thing is, they are taking advantage of an older person and a woman on top of that. It's just terrible."

Police have yet to say what caused Testos' death.
