The Victoria Day Long Weekend got off to a great start with sunny skies and the reopening of outdoor patios. As some head up north to escape the city, those staying in Toronto can still enjoy the fireworks, shopping and parks around the GTA.

Although most services and businesses (including the Beer Store) will be open as usual on Saturday and Sunday, find out what else is open this weekend, what’s closed and how to get around.

Fireworks on Monday, May 23, 2016

• Ashbridges Bay Park at 10 p.m. -- The city promises a show featuring about 2,000 fireworks, with a spectacular finale. With limited parking and some road restrictions in effect, people are advised to take transit. The TTC will be increasing service on the 22A Coxwell, 64 Main and 92 Woodbine South bus routes to help get people to the park.

• Canada’s Wonderland at 10 p.m. – the park boasts a show with 6,000 explosions set to a soundtrack that will play throughout the park.

Road restrictions:

The Gardiner Expressway will be reduced to one lane in each direction in the area where the now demolished Dowling Avenue Bridge once stood, from Friday night at 9 p.m. until Tuesday, May 24, at 5 a.m.

The entire length of the expressway will be reduced to two lanes in each direction overnight during the long weekend:

• On Saturday between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m.

• Sunday from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m.

• Monday from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m.

• Tuesday from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m.

The lane restrictions are for preparatory work that will allow crews to install a new pedestrian and cyclist bridge on June 4 and 5.
