A repairman is in hospital with significant injuries Thursday morning after his head was crushed in elevator doors he was trying to fix in downtown Toronto, police say.

The incident occurred at 543 Richmond St. W just before midnight as the repairman worked on a heavy-duty elevator.

Police say the man's head was stuck for several minutes before firefighters could get to the scene and help him escape.

The man, in his 50s, was rushed to St. Michael's Hospital soon after.

Police say he is expected to survive and that both the Ministry of Labour and Otis Elevator are conducting investigations.
