Tonight marks the second of a series of public consultations the Toronto Police Service is conducting on the modernization of the service.
Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders and Toronto Police Services Board Chair Andy Pringle are looking for input from the public on the Transformational Task Force Interim Report, which made a number of recommendations on how the TPS can save money.
The 35-page interim report, released in June, recommended the service implement a three-year freeze on hiring and that the Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy (TAVIS) be disbanded.
The report also recommends that the service reduce 450 officers through attrition and shut down or merge at least six police stations.
If all recommendations are implemented, the report indicates that the force would save approximately $100 million annually.
The Toronto Police Services Board deferred the debate on the report in June so members of the public across the GTA would have a chance to comment on the recommendations.
Tonight’s meeting will be held at Access Point located at 3079 Danforth Avenue from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
