Social media users are taking to Twitter and Instagram to proudly flaunt their newly acquired Christmas gear, including guns they’ve received as gifts.

Photos posted under the hashtags #AR15 and #Bushmaster began appearing on the social media sites early Christmas morning.

Many of the posted photos show the recipient of the new gun posing with it, often near a Christmas tree or Christmas decorations.

One picture shows a note with a photo of the gun attached, reported to be from a user’s father, explaining that the gun was on back order. “It is yours when it gets here,” promised the note.

The Bushmaster AR-15 rifle was the gun that was primarily used in the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

On Dec. 14, Adam Lanza used the rifle to kill 20 young students and six adult staff members, before taking his own life. Earlier that day, police say he shot and killed his mother.

In the wake of the horrific shooting, U.S. President Barack Obama has pledged to push for gun control legislation, and has asked for a proposal by the end of January.

The National Rifle Association waited one week after the shooting before breaking its silence.

During a press conference, NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre called for the placing of armed guards in every school in the nation. He said it was the best way to protect U.S. school children.
