A Markham man is facing several prostitution-related charges following an assault investigation in the city northeast of Toronto.

York Regional Police said they were called to a condo building on Cox Boulevard on Sunday evening, when a caller reported seeing an injured girl.

When officers arrived, they found a 17-year-old girl hiding behind a security desk, suffering from "obvious injuries."

In a statement Tuesday, officers said they were directed to a condo unit in the building where a suspect in the assault was located and arrested. The victim was taken to hospital.

Police said a further investigation revealed that a man had been "controlling the victim and exploiting her as a juvenile prostitute."

They said they believe there may be more victims, and said that the suspect had spent time in the London, Ont. area.

Police have charged 20-year-old Edwin Jack with trafficking in persons under 18, as well as 12 other offences related to the case. They said Jack also uses the aliases Ziggy, Demario Thompson and Edwin Dexter Jack.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with more information is asked to contact police at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7817, or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
