Police will be watching for drivers who don't pull over for emergency vehicles during their long weekend safety blitz.

Legally, drivers must slow down and pull off to the side of the road if they see an emergency vehicle with flashing lights and sirens coming up behind them.

If an emergency vehicle is pulled over on the side of the road, drivers must move to the left. If it can be done safely, drivers must leave one lane between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle.

The law has been around for 10 years, but police said they’ve laid a record number of charges last year relating to the 'move over' law.

"Since 1989, we've had five officers that were killed by vehicles that did not move over, and we've had so many more officers that have been injured in collisions," Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said Friday.

Police will also be looking for speeding and distracted drivers, as well as those who are impaired or not wearing a seatbelt.
