Toronto police continue to search for a suspect who escaped over the balcony after a suspected drug lab was uncovered in the city’s east end.
Police say the man was inside a Scarborough apartment on Borough Drive, near Ellesmere and McCowan Roads, on Monday when officers arrived on a tip that the apartment contained a hazardous substance.
The suspect barricaded the apartment door before climbing over the 30th storey balcony and jumping into the unit below.
Const. Victor Kwong said the male suspect is still outstanding and is being sought by police.
According to Toronto Fire, someone living below the unit noticed a leak and contacted authorities. The hazmat unit was called in after tests were done on the leaking material.
Hazardous material teams and the Toronto police drug squad combed through the Scarborough apartment Monday afternoon.
Kwong said that while earlier reports suggested that the site could house a meth lab, the apartment appears to be a marijuana grow op.
A search warrant is expected to be executed later on Tuesday.
