York Regional police are looking for a jewellery store bandit posing as a young man shopping for an engagement ring.

At least eight jewellery stores in York Region have been robbed by a man, possibly of Middle Eastern descent, between 20 and 30 years old who has entered each store asking to look at rings in the $10,000 range, police said.

In each instance the man has pretended to compare rings, but has instead fled the store without making a payment.

The suspect, who is about 5'7 and 170 lbs., has been targeting mall jewellery stores in the mid afternoon since January - most recently striking People's Jewellers at Sherway Gardens on Sunday, May 29.

Police remind shop owners of the importance of updating their surveillance equipment to capture images of suspects.

Anyone with information about these incidents is asked to contact York Regional Police at 1-866-876-5423 x 7144 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
