Durham Regional Police confirm a mortar shell was found in Intrepid Park in Whitby.
According to police, members of the Canadian Armed Forces have been called in to remove it.
CP24 has learned that the mortar was located by a souvenir hunter who detected the metal in the ground and started digging.
He unearthed what appears to be a rusty, military mortar round from World War II.
The area has been cordoned off as officials work to remove the item.
Police are members of the military are also searching the area where the mortar was discovered and military bomb technicians are on scene in addition to members of the Oshawa fire department.
Officials say the mortar has been detonated.
It is not clear how the mortar shell ended up at the park.
