Toronto police homicide detectives said they still don't know what prompted a drive-by shooting in Rexdale that killed a 34-year-old man on Sunday afternoon.

Bishen Golaub was shot outside a housing complex on Mount Olive Drive, in the Kipling Avenue and Finch Avenue area, shortly before 2 p.m.

He died en route to Sunnybrook Hospital.

Around 10:30 p.m. Sunday, officers from the Guns and Gangs Task Force arrested two suspects: Awet Asfaha, 24, and Christopher Sherrife, 19. They are both charged with first-degree murder.

Information from witnesses led to the arrests, but policy say they need more.

Homicide Det. Andrew Ecklund appealed to the public for help in determining what may have led to the shooting.

"We know the what, we know the where, we know the when," Ecklund told reporters Tuesday at a news conference at police headquarters. "We just have to figure out the why."

According to Ecklund, Golaub left his home in the Caledonia Road and Eglinton Avenue West area around 1:30 p.m. and drove his gold, four-door Honda Accord to Mount Olive Drive.

The suspects were driving a 2002 silver, four-door Mazda Protg, which has a spoiler and is missing its hub caps, Ecklund said.

Prior to the shooting, the suspects were in the Dixon Road and Martin Grove Road area with two females. Investigators would like to identify them.

"We do not believe they are involved in the shooting," Ecklund said. "However, we think that they will be able to provide us with important information. They know who they are, and we would ask that they come forward to police and speak to us."

Ecklund said that the investigation has so far not determined a link between the suspects and victim, nor to any kind of gang activity.

He also said that he has spoken to detectives who are investigating a rash of shootings over the past few days, and "at this point we haven't determined any connection between these shootings whatsoever."

On Sunday evening, a 22-year-old man was shot in the chest in Wedgewood Park, in the Yonge Street and Steeles Avenue area. He was taken to hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.

On Saturday, an elderly man was sitting on his front porch overlooking Humber Boulevard, in the Weston Road and Black Creek Drive area, when he was struck in the leg in a drive-by shooting.

Police believe the shooters were aiming at a group of man standing nearby. The victim is expected to fully recover.

Anyone with information about Sunday's murder is asked to call the Homicide Squad at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS.
