Toronto Police and the Toronto District School Board are launching their annual road safety campaign to keep streets safe for children as they head back to school.

The "Back to School, Back to Basics – Remember Road Safety" campaign aims to educate drivers, parents and students with back-to-school road safety tips. Police and parking enforcement officials will also be targeting unsafe drivers in school zones during the two-week campaign, which runs until Friday, Sep. 12.

"This campaign will focus on road-users who blatantly and carelessly put children at risk as a result of their poor driving habits," Toronto Police said in a news release Tuesday.

During the campaign, police will be watching for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians who commit offences in the vicinity of school zones. They'll be watching for drivers who speed, make prohibited turns or roll through stop signs will be targeted by police. Police will also be on the lookout for distracted drivers and drivers who violate "No Stopping" and "No Parking" restrictions within school zones.

In addition, police are reminding drivers to obey all school bus stop signs. It is illegal to pass a bus when its lights are flashing and its stop arm is extended. Violating this law can result in imprisonment or a fine of up to $4,000. Drivers will also receive six demerit points on their license.
