A bullet went through the window of a townhouse in the Rexdale neighbourhood early Wednesday morning, according to Toronto police.

Police said the bullet went through the dining room window and into the kitchen cupboard on the ground floor of a home on Henley Crescent, located near Kipling Avenue and Albion Road.

Richard, who did not provide a last name, said he woke up on Wednesday morning to find the bullet hole in his window.

"I realized that there was a hole in my kitchen window, so I went upstairs and asked my son if he had heard anything during the night. He told me that around 9 p.m. he heard an explosion," Richard said. "He told me he loked through the window and didn't see anybody there."

The bullet appeared to enter through the townhouse window where it crossed the kitchen and struck an area of wall above a refrigerator. The bullet then ricoched off the wall, struck an area above a doorway before finally falling to the kitchen floor.

Police spokesperson Const. Caroline de Kloet said the incident may have happened overnight. She said a call came in around 5 a.m. when the townhouse’s tenant realized there was damage to the window and cupboard.

A neighbour told CTV she heard a single gunshot at around 11 p.m. but she said she thought it was a firecracker.

The manager of the townhouse complex said the original tenant was evicted in January for constantly getting into trouble with police and for being too loud. He said a new tenant moved into the townhouse in February.

Many of the area's residents are concerned about the growing number of gun-related incidents.

"I don't know what's happening in the world. The world is crazy, the people are crazy," neighbour Paula Diaz said.

"The people in the commmunity... I'm calling them to work with the police to get the guns off the streets and the violence occurring in the community, in Etobicoke," Pastor Keaton Austin told CTV Toronto.

"I think it's getting worse in this area and they need to do something about it, you know?" Richard said. "We didn't know what was going to happen last night and we woke up only to find out that we could have been the next victim."

Police do not believe the current tenant is the target of the shooting.
