Police have identified two men who died following a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 401 in Whitby late last month.

Allan Banks, 62, and Lewis Dennis Dezsi, 56, were killed after a transport truck collided with vehicles moving slowly through the morning fog, causing an eight-car pileup.

The collision occurred in the eastbound lanes of the 401 near Harwood Avenue, at approximately 6:20 a.m. on Sept. 23.

Two of the vehicles involved the accident were transport trucks, which sandwiched Banks’ SUV between them when they collided.

The 62-year-old was trapped inside the vehicle at the time. Crews worked for nearly two hours to free the driver, but Banks succumbed to injuries at the scene.

“I can’t say enough about the firefighters that were on the scene -- the effort that they put forward here,” said Ajax Fire platoon chief Ron Evans.

Dezsi, whose vehicle also collided with one of the transport trucks, suffered life-threatening injuries. He died in hospital later that day.

There were no other serious injuries.

Police have not said what caused the crash, but noted it was dark and foggy at the time. A fog advisory issued by Environment Canada that day warned visibility was reduced to 250 metres in some parts of the Toronto area.

OPP are looking for more witnesses at they continue to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to call the Whitby OPP detachment at 905-668-3388.
