WHITBY, Ont. -- Police are on the hunt for several suspects after a shooting at an apartment building east of Toronto critically injured a teenager and wounded four others.

Durham Region police say the five were inside an elevator at the Whitby highrise when they were struck by bullets around noon Thursday.

Investigators say it appears to have been a targeted attack.

Police say they are looking for three or four male suspects, but do not yet have a description of them.

They say a 19-year-old Whitby man remains in critical condition following surgery at a Toronto hospital, while two 19-year-old Toronto men and a 17-year-old boy are seriously hurt but expected to survive.

Another 17-year-old Whitby boy was hit by shrapnel. There is no word on his condition.

Police continue to canvass the building and are looking through surveillance footage.
