HAMILTON, Ont. -- A Hamilton man is facing charges after an overnight standoff during which police say a woman was held captive in a downtown apartment.
Police responded to a call around 10 p.m. Friday night that a 35-year-old man armed with several knives had barricaded himself in a third-floor unit and was holding a woman against her will.
Staff Sgt. Mark Cox says the man threatened to set her on fire using an aerosol can and a lighter but was unsuccessful because the lighter was not working.
At one point, the man tossed an air conditioner from a window.
Police say that after four hours of negotiations, the man surrendered and was taken into custody.
The man faces charges of assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, mischief and breach of probation.
