A fugitive wanted in Massachusetts was arrested by police Tuesday, after allegedly sneaking into Canada in a kayak.

Steven John Pieczynski, 37, was arrested around 3 p.m. by members of the Toronto Police Fugitive Squad near Markham Road and Eglinton Avenue, said police in a statement.

It is alleged that he entered the country illegally on Sept. 29 in a kayak launched from Lewiston, N.Y., on the lower Niagara River.

After crossing the Niagara River, police believe he made his way to Toronto.

Pieczynski is wanted in Massachusetts for violation of probation and failing to appear for sentencing for burglary and theft charges.

He is now in custody at the Metro West Detention Centre while immigration proceedings begin.
