TORONTO - Nearly 50 people from the Toronto area are facing a total of 175 charges after police made a series of arrests in a massive drug bust.

The nine-month investigation was a joint effort involving York Regional Police, Toronto police and police agencies in British Columbia, the U.S. and the United Kingdom.

Police also seized 11 firearms, more than $100,000 in cash and a wide variety of drugs.

The narcotics included 6.7 kilograms of heroin, 1.5 kilograms of crystal meth, more than 8,500 tablets of OxyContin, more than 9,500 ecstasy pills and smaller quantities of cocaine, marijuana and opium.

Police began the investigation after recovering a gun that led officers to several people suspected of trafficking drugs.

The 48 people arrested are all residents of the Greater Toronto Area, and the charges include possession for the purpose of trafficking and production of a controlled substance.
