Two North York parents arrested in connection with the death of their 4-year-old son now face first-degree murder charges.

Police say the child was found inside a North York townhouse located on Finch Avenue East, just east of Leslie Street, early Monday.

Police have not said how the child died. But sources previously told CTV Toronto one of the allegations suggests that a young child inside the townhouse was forced to stand against a wall in a hallway for hours on end as punishment. Fatigue, malnourishment and trauma may have been a factor in his death, according to unconfirmed reports.

Joel Roberto, 27, and Ravyn Colley, 24, were arrested on Monday and were originally charged with failing to provide the necessities of life in connection to the child’s death. They appeared in court Thursday and now face first-degree murder charges. They are scheduled to make another court appearance on Oct. 24.
