A week after a one-month-old boy died in hospital, York Regional Police have charged the child’s young parents with his murder.

Police said Wednesday that a 21-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman have been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the child’s death.

The child died on Aug. 22, 2013, after he was brought in to a local hospital without vital signs. An autopsy raised some suspicion about how the baby died as it showed that blunt force trauma was the source of his death.

Now, investigators are reaching out to the suspects’ friends and family to try and piece together what happened in the days before the baby’s death.

Markham residents Kien Phat Tran, 21, and Thi My Phuong Bui, 22, were arrested without incident on Tuesday and were expected to make a court appearance in Newmarket today.

Anyone with information is asked to call York Region’s homicide unit at 866-876-5423, ext. 7865.
