A man and woman from Scarborough were lucky to walk away with minor injuries after a wheel came off a pickup truck and crashed into their car on Canada’s busiest highway, police say.
The man and woman, both 68, were driving in Highway 401’s westbound express lanes near Leslie Street when the tire and rim bounced across several lanes and caved in the Honda Civic’s windshield and roof, said Sgt. Dave Woodford, an Ontario Provincial Police spokesman.
Woodford said the tire and rim came off an eastbound Dodge Ram truck, and the couple was briefly trapped in the car after the incident.
Firefighters freed the man and woman, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to a local hospital as a precaution, Woodford told CP24 reporter Katie Simpson.
Woodford said the loose wheel apparently hit a safety bar located between the car’s windshield and hood, and that may have protected the man and woman from further injury.
The pickup truck's driver is facing charges under the Highway Traffic Act, Woodford said.
