CHATHAM, Ont. -- Chatham-Kent police say they are consulting the Crown and OSPCA after a puppy was killed early today during a domestic assault.

Police allege a 25-year-old man threw the puppy down the stairs of an apartment building during a dispute with his common-law wife.

Investigators say the man threw the dog to the ground a second time when the woman tried to save the animal.

Police say the man is due in court today for a bail hearing after being arrested for domestic assault and threatening.
