The Ontario government will meet with municipalities to discuss lower speed limits across the province, in an attempt to improve road safety.

The residential speed limit is set at 50 km/h in Ontario municipalities, according to the Highway Traffic Act, but the Liberal government is considering lowering the limit to 40 km/h.

"Data tells us that a reduction of speed limit, just a reduction of 10 km/h, makes a significant difference in terms of saving a life," Community Safety Minister Yasir Naqvi told CTV Ottawa Thursday.

Naqvi said he'd also like to reduce the 40 km/h limit in school zones to 30 km/h.
