TORONTO - Commuters and businesses across Ontario are being encouraged to reduce greenhouse gases under three new green transportation initiatives.

The province is creating a green vehicle program that will rate cars, light trucks and commercial vehicles based on environmental criteria.

Expected to launch in the summer of 2008, the program will provide incentives for those who buy green vehicles, which will be recognized with an eco-licence plate.

The province is also investing $15 million in a pilot project to help businesses convert to more environmentally friendly technologies like hybrid power.

Ontario will also beef up the use of cleaner fuel for its own fleet of vehicles by installing two new ethanol fuelling stations in the province.

Environment Minister Laurel Broten says the new facilities could also be made available to municipal fleets once they're operational.
