One person is injured after a pick-up truck collided with a tractor trailer carrying cattle in Mono, Ontario.

It happened around 9 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 89 and Airport Road.

Ontario Provincial Police say a tractor trailer carrying 40 cows was travelling eastbound on Highway 89 when it T-boned a Ford pick-up truck travelling southbound on Airport Road. The collision caused the pick-up truck to swerve into a ditch and then into a traffic light, knocking it over.

The male driver of the pick-up truck was initially trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated.

"When our officers got on scene they were very concerned because the truck was right on top of him and he was underneath, so we had to get a heavy tow here immediately," OPP told CTV Toronto.

Both drivers were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

OPP says about 12 cows escaped the trailer following the crash. The cows have since been rounded up by area farmers.

"There were 40 cattle on board, about 12 of them escaped up the hill and they were corralled by a local farmers and volunteers. We're still removing cattle now, there were a few that had to be euthanized by a veteranrian,” OPP said.

Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen how the collision occurred to come forward.
