One man is dead and another is in hospital following a shooting in North York Wednesday afternoon, Toronto police have confirmed.

Officers were called to the Laura Road and Sheppard Avenue area shortly before 5 p.m. after receiving multiple reports that two vehicles were exchanging gunfire.

“There was a black vehicle southbound on Laura (Road), another black vehicle overtook it on the left side and opened fire on it,” Toronto police Sgt. Rob Duthie told reporters at the scene in an update Wednesday evening.

Duthie said it appeared as if shots were only fired from one vehicle, and not from both as had been previously reported by witnesses.

Upon arrival, officers located a vehicle with two injured occupants inside but were unable to locate the second vehicle.

One of the men was rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition via emergency run while the second victim was transported in non-life-threatening condition.

In an update provided shortly after 7 p.m., police confirmed that the 21-year-old driver of the vehicle had succumbed to his injuries.

His name has not yet been released by investigators.

The second victim, also 21, is currently co-operating with police, Duthie said.

The second vehicle was last seen driving eastbound along Sheppard Avenue towards Jane Street.

It is described by police as a black, newer-model, four-door Honda.

In an earlier telephone interview with CP24, Const. Allyson Douglas-Cook said that witnesses reported hearing between six and 10 gunshots.

“We have multiple shell casings on the ground behind me, but I can’t tell you how many at this stage,” Duthie said at the scene.

The area is currently closed as police continue to investigate.
