A Toronto man is dead following a shooting Monday that temporarily placed a number of downtown schools in a hold-and-secure.

The shooting happened in an alleyway near Shuter and Trefann Streets, just east of Parliament Street, at approximately 2:45 p.m.

First responders at the scene found an individual suffering from gunshot wounds and attempted resuscitation. He later died of his injuries. Police have not released his identity, but say the 18-year-old was a resident of the area.

Police say the shooting happened after a confrontation involving a group of males.

"There was an altercation between approximately four or five males," Sgt. Corey Crawford told CTV Toronto. "As a result, one of the males was shot."

Police say they have located one of the possible suspects.

"We've tracked down possibly one of the suspects," Crawford said. "We have not recovered the firearm (that was used) or the person who actually did the shooting."

A number of schools in the area, including Nelson Mandela Public School, Lord Dufferin School, and Sprucecourt Public School were placed in a hold-and-secure while police searched for suspects.
