A man in his 50s is dead after a two-alarm fire at an apartment building in Parkdale, according to Toronto Fire Services.

Crews responded to a fire at an apartment building at 245 Dunn Ave., south of Queen Street and west of Dufferin Street, around 8 p.m.

Fire crews had to pull a man out of an apartment on the 11th floor, through thick black smoke.

The 59-year-old man was removed from the building and rushed to hospital, where crews tried to resuscitate him, but they were unable to save him. The victim's identity has not been made public.

Division Commander Len Stadler said three other people had also been taken to hospital. A 52-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries, but his current condition is unknown. The other two were treated for smoke inhalation.

Two hours after the fire, tenants of the building were allowed to return to their apartments, except for those who live on the floor where the fire occurred.

Stadler said it was too early in the investigation to determine the cause of the fire, and couldn't say whether the fire had been deemed suspicious.

The Ontario Fire Marshal has been called to investigate.
