Two firefighters were injured this morning while battling a five-alarm fire in the city's Trinity Bellwoods neighbourhood.
Officials say the blaze broke out at around 11:30 p.m. at a store located at 792 Dundas Street West, near Palmerston Avenue.
The smoke was first detected by a resident in one of the units above the store.
Division Commander Bob O'Halloran said it is believed that the fire started in the basement of the building.
Once the fire reached the roof, O'Halloran said it spread to other units with a shared attic.
In total, five units were damaged in the fire.
"Once it got into the attic, it’s really hard to get out. We had crews up on the roof for the longest time moving them all over the place, trying to find the hotspots," O'Halloran told CP24 at the scene.
"I would say we had crews on the roof for better than two hours."
Paramedics say one firefighter suffered a broken finger while another tore rib muscles while trying to extinguish the blaze.
While fire crews managed to save two cats, one other cat died as a result of smoke inhalation.
Everyone inside the units got out safely.
At the height of the fire, more than 100 firefighters were on scene.
The fire also caused power outages, road closures and transit diversions in the area.
Residents in the area bounded by College Street, Queen Street, Euclid Avenue, and Augusta Avenue were without power due to the fire.
Dundas Street was also closed Bathurst Street to Manning Avenue, forcing the 505 Dundas streetcar to divert both ways via Dundas West Station, Roncesvalles, King, Spadina, Queen, and McCaul.
The Office of the Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate.
