An off-duty police officer has been charged with impaired driving following a collision in Whitby on the weekend.

Durham Regional Police said the crash happened at Brock Street and Consumers Drive at approximately 1:40 a.m. on Sunday. A police say was driven by an off-duty officer collided with another vehicle that had three people inside, striking the car from behind.

Police said that two passengers were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

At the time of the crash, the off-duty officer was arrested and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. His licence was also suspended for 90 days.

Following an investigation, 41-year-old William Browell has been charged with impaired driving. The West Division officer has been assigned to administrative duties until a verdict has been reached in court.
