An off-duty firefighter may have saved three people's lives after he ran into a burning home in Whitby, Ont., on Tuesday.

Jay Bolduc's wife was passing by the home on Kirby Crescent, located near Thickson Road South and Highway 401, when she spotted the fire.

She Facetimed her husband, who quickly ran over from their nearby home. Bolduc, who is a firefighter in Ajax, ran into the smoke-filled home and helped three people exit the building.

Area resident Christie Douglas who called 911, says shortly after they escaped the burning home, flames began shooting out of the second-storey window.

"Just after he got out … the flames came out of the front window," she told CTV Toronto.

Bolduc says as he was inside the home, his wife was telling him to get out of the building.

"I was in there and she said she saw flames come out … I could hear her tell me 'Jay, you should get out.'"

Bolduc said once they exited the home, the fire was "fully involved' on the second floor.

Firefighters have not said what sparked the fire.
