Crews across the city are working to complete the construction work at more than 100 Toronto elementary schools in order to accommodate the final rollout of full-day kindergarten this fall.

But despite the push to have all the work done by September, there will still be a number of students who will be without a permanent classroom when the school bell rings for the first time.

According to the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), construction at seven schools will likely not be completed by Labour Day:

  • Chief Dan George Public School
  • Keel Street Public School
  • Swansea Public School
  • Bedford Park Public School
  • Brookside Public School
  • Grenoble Public School
  • Rosedale Junior Public School

Students at some of these schools will be learning in either other classrooms in the building or in a portable for a few weeks. These seven schools are among the 98 that are under construction in Toronto to accommodate full-day kindergarten. According to the TDSB, the estimated cost for the construction work is $88.5 million.

One of the reasons for the delay is the lack of tradespeople who are available to complete the work in the classrooms. Many of them have been booked to complete other projects, including road work, construction for the Pan Am Games and the LRT.

"The biggest concern is the availability of trades," project supervisor Jatin Amin told CTV Toronto on Wednesday. "One thing the TDSB wanted to do was get out all the trade tenders early because all the school boards want the same trades."

Other school boards:

Toronto Catholic District School Board

There are approximately eight projects that will likely not be done on time, the board says. Some of the affected kindergarten students may need to be hosted in a different room in the school for as long as a few months. In total, the board says there are 42 schools that are under construction -- an investment of approximately $40.5 million.

Peel District School Board

The Peel school board says there are currently 29 construction projects taking place to accommodate the roll out of full-day kindergarten this fall. The cost of the construction work is approximately $35.4 million.

"The Peel board will introduce full-day kindergarten to 52 elementary schools in September 2014, with 19,900 students already enrolled; however, we anticipate that number will increase as many parents have historically registered their children for school in late August," the school board told CTV Toronto in an email.
