Police say that an officer fired her weapon following a traffic stop in Scarborough on Tuesday.

The traffic stop took place on Adanac Drive in the McCowan and Bellamy roads area at around 10:40 a.m.

Police say that the suspect fled the scene on foot after being pulled over. He was then arrested a short distance away.

“The suspect fled from the vehicle and was chased by the officer. Sometime after that there was an interaction where a shot was discharged,” Sgt. Mike Williams told CP24 at the scene on Tuesday.

Williams said that the driver was unharmed in the altercation while the officer received a minor injury and was transported to hospital via ambulance.

“She is a little shaken up but no serious injuries,” he said.

Video taken by a CP24 viewer shows the female officer pointing her gun at an unidentified man as he lies face down in a parking lot. The officer can be heard saying “shots fired” as she radios for backup. At one point, the suspect sits up and the officer shouts “Get down on the ground. Get down on the ground. Now.”

Seconds later, a police cruiser arrives on scene and a second officer gets out and helps the first officer arrest the man.

According to Williams, there are two parallel investigations taking place. There is a criminal investigation pertaining to the arrest of the suspect and what led up to it and an administrative investigation, which is conducted whenever police discharge their firearm.

Sources told CTV News Toronto that the officer involved in the traffic stop also discharged her weapon in a fatal incident almost four years ago on June 8, 2013.

Information released by the Special Investigations Unit at the time indicates that the officer fatally shot 39-year-old Malcolm Jackman after he took a hostage and put a knife to the person’s throat.

Then-SIU director Ian Scott cleared the officer of any wrong-doing and concluded that the lethal force used in the incident was justified, as the officer had tried to use non-lethal force first and because Jackman represented “an imminent threat of death or serious injury to the citizen.”

Police continue to investigate Tuesday’s incident.

The suspect, a 29-year-old man, is charged with impaired driving.

“Anyone that was in this area with an in-car camera of their own or anybody that captured it or saw it we would like them to step forward,” Williams said.

Eglinton Avenue East was closed at Mason Road but has since reopened.
