Toronto's city manager wants council to spend another $1.65 million to study the SmartTrack proposal, Mayor John Tory's signature transit policy.

In a report released Friday, City Manager Joe Pennachetti says additional analysis is necessary along the proposed Eglinton Avenue West corridor, where tunnelling might be required.

This portion of the route would not run on existing GO tracks, unlike the other sections of Tory's 22-stop, $8-billion line.

Panachetti says the additional studies will look at the "technical feasibility of rapid transit options on a new rail corridor along Eglinton West to Mississauga Airport Corporate Centre."

Friday's study is expected to be considered by the executive committee on Jan. 22.

The city has already previously approved $750,000 in study spending for SmartTrack.

Panachetti says a financing strategy for the proposed transit plan is expected to be presented to council in the fall.
