A man has been charged in connection with a sexual assault investigation dating back five years.

Toronto police allege that a 14-year-old girl was extorted into a relationship with a 36-year-old man between 2010 and 2011.

Few details have been provided, but police said the man met the teen while he was working as a musical performer in Toronto's Afghan community.

"The man used the girl's cultural restrictions as a means to coerce her into the relationship," police said in a statement Thursday.

Police said the man sexually assaulted the girl in several locations in Toronto, including the Thorncliffe Park area.

Abdul Basir Samir, 41, was arrested on March 20, 2015. He has since been charged with extortion, sexual assault and invitation to sexual touching. He is also charged with permitting a person under 16 years of age on a premise for sexual purpose, sexual interference with a person under 16, and publishing defamatory libel.

In the statement Thursday, police said the man is still working in the community as a musical performer.
