A museum in London, Ont. is hoping to be the final home for a historic box of Frosted Flakes produced at the city’s now-shuttered Kellogg’s plant.

The box is currently in Timmins, Ont., at the home of high school teacher Stephane Gaudette, who discovered the treasure he had picked up at the grocery store when he sat down for breakfast on Monday morning.

“I noticed there was something written on the plastic bag inside after I opened up the box,” Gaudette told CTV News.

Written in black marker and dated Dec. 5, 2014, the note read: “This is the very last bag of Canadian cereal for the Canadian market from Kellogg’s London Ontario plant.”

Now, Museum London, which has a mandate to collect artifacts that document local history, wants the box. Curator Amber Lloydlangston has already called Gaudette to ask about his plans.

“Do you have plans for the box after? Are you willing to consider donating it?” Lloydlangston asked Gaudette during a telephone call on Tuesday.

Gaudette replied that it is “still too early to tell” what he will do with the box.

“Obviously I’m going to keep it for a little bit,” Gaudette told Lloydlangston. “I don’t know for how long.”

While Gaudette was non-committal about the box, Lloydlangston hopes that former employees of the plant will come forward with items that document the workers’ history at the facility.

That means anything from uniforms to lunch boxes to hair nets; so long as they paint a picture of those who worked there.

Former employee Karen Jenkins cooked the last batch of corn that was used to make the final boxes of cereal, including the box that ended up in Gaudette’s home.

According to Jenkins, many former employees were given “a lot of stuff” over the years that they may be able to donate to the museum.

Jenkins now helps fellow former employees who are looking for work.

“I wasn’t ready to leave,” she told CTV London. The plant closed last December after 138 years, putting 450 out of work.

“There are emotions you have to work yourself through,” Jenkins said. “But you know what? There’s another chapter in your life that you have to continue on with.”

Meanwhile, Gaudette plans to tour the box around Timmins until the end of the week. And Museum London would like to hear from any former employees interested in donating artifacts.
