UPDATE: Documents obtained by CTV News Toronto indicate the charge of kidnapping against Sukhbaj Singh was withdrawn by the Crown on July 31, 2018. Singh was found not guilty of forcible confinement and assault on Oct. 25, 2018.

An Uber driver is facing charges after police say he attempted to abduct an 18-year-old woman in the city’s Yonge and Eglinton neighbourhood.

The woman told police that she ordered an Uber ride through her phone shortly after 4 p.m. on May 21 and requested that the driver pick her up near Eglinton and Dunfield avenues.

Once inside the Uber, the woman says the male driver started an inappropriate conversation with her and made unwanted advances.

Police say the woman refused the advances and when she asked to be let out of the car, the driver refused.

At that point, police believe the driver attempted to forcibly take the woman to a private location but she was able to escape and called police.

In a statement provided to CTV News Toronto, Uber spokesperson Kayla Whaling condemned the allegations against the driver.

“What’s been described is unacceptable and is not tolerated on the Uber app,” she said. “We immediately removed this driver’s access following this report and will provide any information to law enforcement that would be helpful for their investigation.”

A suspect identified as 24-year-old Sukhbaj Singh, of Belleville, was charged Monday with forcible confinement, kidnapping and assault.

Anyone with new information about the investigation is being asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.
