The Toronto Transit Commission has spoken out after a photo emerged online of a bedbug on one of its streetcars.

A photo posted to Reddit shows a bedbug on someone’s glove along with caption “So…the 501 (Queen Street) streetcar has bedbugs now.”

The post, submitted on Friday, was shared thousands of times on social media. Hundreds of people commented on the post, most of them sharing their own bedbug horror stories.

But TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said the bedbugs likely came on board the streetcar with a passenger.

“Transit vehicles are an inhospitable environment for bed bugs,” he said in an email statement. “If they're seen on a vehicle, they came on board with someone and won't survive long on their own.”

Ross said the TTC will clean and fumigate the streetcar before it is put back into use.
