For many, getting their electricity bill is one of the most dreaded moments of the month. And while utility bill are something we all have to live with, there are some things you can do to save money.

Here is a list of simple steps you can take to save money on your next utility bill.

Air filter

1) Change your furnace filter every three months. Furnace filters used for more than three months can easily get clogged and struggle to draw in air, causing the furnace to use more energy.

Thermostat

2) Program your thermostat so it isn’t always running. Most people now have thermostats that can be programmed so that they are only running for part of the day or during off-peak hours, saving you money on your electricity bill.

AC cover

3) Take the cover off your air conditioner. Many people don’t take off the covers on their central air conditioning units at the beginning of the summer. Not only will the make the unit use more electricity, it could also damage your air conditioner.

Tips to save you money on your energy bill

4) Invest in ceiling fans. Ceiling fans cost pennies to operate and are an easy way to cool down individual rooms.

Close the blinds

5) Close the blinds on sunny days. Sunlight can significantly increase the temperature in your home. Make sure to close the drapes on your South and West-facing windows to keep your home as cool as possible.

Pool pump

6) Run your pool pump during off-peak hours. Much like thermostats, you can program your pool pump to only work during off-peak hours in order to save money on your energy bill.
